Is Smallpdf Safe? What Their Own Pages Say About Your Files

Short answer: Smallpdf is a legitimate Swiss-based company, ISO 27001 certified, and it says it deletes free-tool files one hour after processing. It is still a server-side tool: your PDF is uploaded to process it. That is not the same as a tool that never uploads your file.

We run EasyPDFLoad, a browser-based alternative that does not upload files. The Smallpdf facts below come from Smallpdf's own Is Smallpdf Safe? page and privacy notice, read in October 2026. We have not tested their servers.

What Smallpdf says about your files

What those pages do not say

Neither page mentions HIPAA. A separate Smallpdf blog post says it is not HIPAA-compliant, and we found no business associate agreement on its pricing or trust pages. Read is Smallpdf HIPAA compliant for what that means. Its e-signature product has its own timelines, which we did not review. And the access and deletion claims are Smallpdf's statements. They are reasonable, but we cannot verify them from outside.

Smallpdf vs a no-upload tool

Is Smallpdf safe for sensitive documents?

It depends on the file. For a public brochure, a one-hour copy on a certified provider is a small risk. For a passport scan, a tax return, a contract or medical records, the question is whether you want any copy outside your device, even briefly. If not, use a tool that never uploads it, such as Merge PDF or Compress PDF.

Limit of this page: the browser tools here do not do everything Smallpdf does. If you need a feature we do not have, upload tools remain the only option.

How to check any PDF tool, including this one

Open your browser developer tools, go to the Network tab, drop a dummy PDF and look for a large request carrying the file. If it goes out, it is an upload tool, whatever the homepage says. Straight answers (Is Smallpdf Safe)

Is Smallpdf safe?

Smallpdf is a legitimate company with ISO 27001 certification, but it is not private in the no-upload sense. Your file is uploaded to its servers, and Smallpdf says free-tool files are deleted after one hour.

Does Smallpdf upload my files?

Yes. Smallpdf's own page says files are removed from its servers after one hour of processing, which means they reach those servers first. Transfers are encrypted with TLS.

How long does Smallpdf keep files?

For free tools, Smallpdf says one hour after processing. For files stored in an account, its pages disagree: one says removal within an hour of deleting, the privacy notice says generally within 14 days. Its e-signature product has separate timelines.

Is Smallpdf HIPAA compliant?

The safety page and privacy notice do not mention HIPAA, and a Smallpdf blog post says it is not HIPAA-compliant. Do not send protected health information without a signed agreement. See our HIPAA guide.

Is there a no-upload alternative to Smallpdf?

Yes. A browser-based tool processes the file in your tab and never sends it to a server. You can confirm that in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
