What actually happens to your file

pdf-lib reads the PDF's AcroForm structure directly in this tab to detect existing text fields, checkboxes, radio groups, and dropdowns, then writes the values you enter back into those same field objects — the form stays interactive by default rather than being flattened into flat text. If you add a signature, it's captured as an image on your browser's canvas and embedded onto the page the same way Sign PDF does. The completed document is assembled entirely in memory and handed to your download, with the form's contents never sent to a server.

Limits and edge cases

  • Only fields already built into the PDF as an interactive form are detected — a scanned form with no real form fields has nothing for this tool to find; use Sign PDF to place text or a signature freely instead.
  • Filled-in field values remain editable after download unless the form is flattened, since the underlying AcroForm fields are kept live by default.
  • A password-protected PDF needs to be unlocked first, since detecting and writing to form fields requires opening the file directly.
  • Complex forms with scripted field behavior (auto-calculating totals, conditional fields) may not trigger those scripts here, since this tool fills values without executing a PDF's embedded JavaScript.

What if my PDF doesn't have fillable form fields?+
If a PDF has no interactive form fields, there's nothing for this tool to detect. Use our Sign PDF tool instead to add a signature anywhere on the page, or Add Page Numbers / Watermark for other annotations.
What field types are supported?+
Text fields, checkboxes, radio button groups, and dropdown menus that are already built into the PDF form are detected and can be filled in.
Is my filled-in form uploaded anywhere?+
No. Field values are written into the PDF entirely in your browser using JavaScript — the form and your entries never leave your device.
Can I still edit the form after downloading?+
Yes, unless you flatten the fields. This tool keeps the underlying form fields intact by default, so the values you entered can still be changed by anyone with a PDF editor.
Does this work on a Chromebook without a Play Store app?+
Yes. Form filling and signing both happen inside this web page, so there's nothing to install — it works the same on a Chromebook with Play Store access turned off as it does anywhere else.
