Compress PDF to 5MB

Drop your file and the tool re-encodes it until it fits under 5 MB, in this tab, with no upload. Most scans already fit, so the work is usually quick.

Your file never leaves your device.

When you need 5 MB

5 MB is about email and general uploads rather than strict portals. It keeps a file comfortably inside the attachment limits of the common mail providers, which are listed in our guide to PDFs that are too big to email.

Because an email attachment is encoded before sending, a file close to the limit can still be refused. Leaving headroom is why 5 MB is a useful target.

You need to email a signed 18 MB contract scan to a client whose server rejects large attachments. Setting the target to 5 MB keeps the pages readable on screen and puts the file well under the limit.

What gets sacrificed at 5 MB

Very little is visible at this size. In our test the 20-page, 29 MB scan came out at 4.85 MB. Files that are already small are returned smaller than the target, because the tool does not enlarge images to fill the space.

The text is not selectable afterwards, because each page becomes an image. If the PDF is mostly text, it may not need compressing at all.

If it will not reach 5 MB

Still too large to send. Share a link from a cloud drive instead of attaching the file, or split the PDF into two emails.

A text-heavy file. If it is already under 5 MB, send it as it is. Image mode can make it bigger.

How to check nothing is uploaded (5 MB)

Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then drop a file and compress it. No request carries the document. The full method is in how to tell if a PDF tool uploads your file.

Limits (5 MB)

  • Every page is re-rendered as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • A mostly-text PDF may not reach 5 MB; the tool reports the smallest usable size instead.
  • Very large scans can take a few extra seconds while the tool searches for the right quality.

Questions (5 MB)

How do I compress a PDF to 5MB?+
Drop the PDF below. The target is already set to 5 MB, so click Compress to Target Size and download the result. Everything runs in your browser.
Can every PDF get under 5MB?+
No. Scans and photo PDFs usually can. A mostly-text PDF may stop above the target. The tool tells you the size it reached, and it never downloads a file larger than your original.
Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?+
No. The file is processed in this browser tab and never sent to a server. You can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
Will the text still be selectable?+
No. Each page becomes a compressed image, so the words turn into pixels. Keep the original if you need to copy or search the text later.
Is there a free limit or a watermark?+
No. The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Is 5MB small enough to email a PDF?+
Yes for the common providers, whose limits are 20 to 25 MB or more. Our guide to PDFs that are too big to email lists the figures and explains why encoding makes the real limit lower.
