Is iLovePDF Safe for Sensitive Documents?

Short answer: For most documents, yes. iLovePDF says it deletes processed files within two hours, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and does not sell your data. For a passport scan, medical or legal papers, the file still reaches its servers, so consider a tool that never receives it.
EasyPDFLoad is a competing PDF tool. This page quotes iLovePDF's own pages, read in October 2026: its security page, privacy policy, terms and pricing page. We read them as extracted text, so check the live wording before you rely on a figure.
What does iLovePDF say it does with your file?
iLovePDF processes your file on its servers. Its terms say it will "automatically delete files from your Content within two (2) hours of processing them". The security page repeats the two hour figure and says iLovePDF does not retain user documents. Its privacy policy says it processes personal data within the European Economic Area as a general rule, and may process data closer to the user for people outside it.
On trust, the security page says iLovePDF holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and states "We do not sell your data to third parties." The privacy policy says it does not use your content to train AI models. The privacy policy lists service providers acting as processors among the parties that may receive data. For the plain-language version of these claims, see our guide on whether iLovePDF steals your data. This page goes further and asks which of your documents belong there.
What does a two hour retention window mean in practice?
Two hours is short, and it is a promise from the vendor, not something you can observe. During those two hours a copy sits on a server you do not control. Anyone with access to that server, a backup or a log could in principle reach it. iLovePDF says it does not access or analyze the content you upload, and we have no reason to doubt that. It is still a statement you trust rather than a fact you can check.
The window also starts after processing, not on upload. A large merge that takes a few minutes holds your file for slightly longer. You can delete a file early with the "Delete it now" option, which iLovePDF describes on its blog. Support is different: the terms say that if you send a file to support, iLovePDF may keep it for technical studies. Do not email a sensitive file to a help desk.
What changes when you sign a document?
The two hour rule does not cover signed documents. Per the terms, registered users' self-signed documents are kept for two years for simple signatures and five years for advanced signatures. Signature requests follow the same periods, and audit trails are kept for a maximum of five years. A guest who signs without an account gets deletion within two hours.
iLovePDF's own pages disagree on this. A blog post says self-signing data is kept on cloud servers for one month before deletion. The terms say two or five years. The security page says signed documents are kept for a maximum of five years. We would treat the terms as the binding text, but the mismatch is a reason to ask iLovePDF which figure applies before you sign anything sensitive. Our sign tool places a visual signature in your browser tab and is not certificate based, so it is not a replacement for a legally recognised e-signature service.
Which of your documents should go to an upload tool?
Match the document to the risk. This is our reading, not a rule.
| Document | Upload tool with a two hour window | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Lecture handout, public flyer | Low risk. Nothing here is private. | Use whatever is fastest. |
| Payslip, bank statement | Moderate. It holds your income and account numbers. | Fine if you accept the trust. A local tool avoids it. |
| Passport or ID scan | High. A copy sits on a server for two hours. | Prefer a tool that keeps the file in your tab. |
| Contract | Depends on confidentiality terms. | Check whether your agreement bars third party processing. |
| Medical or legal papers | Highest. Rules and duties may apply. | No BAA found. Ask your compliance officer first. |
On health information specifically, we found no business associate agreement on iLovePDF's privacy, security, terms or business pages. Its business page says "Ensure compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other standards", while its own GDPR blog says iLovePDF alone does not make a U.S. organization HIPAA compliant. If you handle protected health information, see our page on HIPAA and PDF tools.
Which iLovePDF features are server side by design?
Everything iLovePDF offers in the browser processes your file on its servers, so no feature of the web version is local. Two are worth naming because people reach for them with scanned papers. OCR turns a scan into searchable text, and PDF to Word turns a file into an editable one. If the scan is a passport or a signed contract, that is a sensitive file going through a conversion pipeline.
iLovePDF also sells desktop apps for Mac and Windows and says you can work offline with them. We did not review their network behavior. If you need these features on private documents, the desktop app, or a local tool, is the better question to ask about.
EasyPDFLoad has limits here. Its OCR tool runs in your browser, loads only the English recognition model and downloads its engine on first use. It will not match a server tool on other languages. Its compress tool in target-size mode re-renders every page as an image, so text stops being selectable.
What are the free tier limits?
As read on the pricing page in October 2026, the free plan merges up to 25 files and 100 MB per task, and compresses 2 files and 200 MB per task. Premium raises these to 500 files and 4 GB for merge. The pricing page only partly rendered when we read it, so recheck the figures live. We could not find a daily limit or a watermark statement.
For comparison, see how the two tools line up in our EasyPDFLoad and iLovePDF comparison. A large file that exceeds the free limit is one of the cases where iLovePDF is simply the better fit. A browser tab has memory limits on very large merges, so test a big job first.
How to check where your file goes
- Open the tool in a desktop browser, press F12 and choose the Network tab.
- Tick Preserve log and clear the list.
- Use a test PDF of a few megabytes, then run the tool.
- Sort by size. An upload shows as a request roughly the size of your file, usually a POST to the vendor's servers. Then look for a second request that downloads the result.
Run the same check on our merge tool and compare. You should see no request carrying your file. Our upload check guide explains what each request means. This shows what the page does today, not what a vendor does later with a file it has received.
When is iLovePDF simply fine?
Most of the time. A public document, a school handout, a restaurant menu or a CV you are about to send anyway does not need extra care. A two hour deletion window, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and EEA processing are reasonable for ordinary files. If you need the 4 GB limit, the desktop app or the wider feature set, use it. The risk question matters most for documents whose exposure would cause real harm.
