When you need 2 MB

Some forms, learning platforms and older mail systems still cap an attachment at 2 MB. It is a comfortable size for a multi-page scan.

A learning platform accepts assignments up to 2 MB, and your 14-page scanned coursework is 9 MB. Setting the target to 2 MB shrinks it until it fits, and shows the final size before you download.

What gets sacrificed at 2 MB

At 2 MB the loss is hard to see on screen. In our test every image-based file reached 2 MB. For some files the output is smaller than the target, for example 394 KB for a one-page photo, because the tool stops raising image quality at a ceiling instead of padding the file.

If it will not reach 2 MB

A mostly-text PDF. In image mode a result larger than the original is not downloaded, and the tool tells you. Send the original in that case.

A very large scan. If the tool cannot reach 2 MB, split the document or remove blank pages.

How to check nothing is uploaded (2 MB)

Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then drop a file and compress it. No request carries the document. The full method is in how to tell if a PDF tool uploads your file.

Limits (2 MB)

  • Every page is re-rendered as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • A mostly-text PDF may not reach 2 MB; the tool reports the smallest usable size instead.
  • Very large scans can take a few extra seconds while the tool searches for the right quality.

Why is my result much smaller than 2MB?+
The tool stops raising quality at a ceiling instead of filling the limit. It is a no-larger-than tool, not an exact-size tool. A smaller file is not worse for the form.
