Compress PDF to 1MB

Drop your file and the tool re-encodes it until it fits under 1 MB, in this tab, with no upload. If it cannot get there, it tells you the smallest size it reached.

Your file never leaves your device.

When you need 1 MB

A 1 MB limit is common on web forms, content management systems and visa or permit portals, where it caps a single attached PDF.

At this size a scan keeps most of its detail, so the page usually reads like the original on screen.

A visa portal accepts one PDF of up to 1 MB, and your bank statement scan is 6 MB. Setting the target to 1 MB shrinks it until it fits, and shows the final size before you download.

What gets sacrificed at 1 MB

In our test every image-based file reached 1 MB, from a one-page photo to the 20-page, 29 MB scan, which came out at 991 KB. Photographs lose fine texture and a long scan loses sharpness, but ordinary printed text stays easy to read.

If you need to keep selectable text, the keep text selectable mode of Compress PDF only recompresses the images, but it may not reach 1 MB.

If it will not reach 1 MB

A PDF that is mostly text. It may not shrink. In image mode the tool does not download a result larger than the original and tells you instead. If the original is under 1 MB already, there is nothing to do.

More than one document. If you are merging first, compress the merged file once at the end rather than each part.

How to check nothing is uploaded (1 MB)

Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then drop a file and compress it. No request carries the document. The full method is in how to tell if a PDF tool uploads your file.

Limits (1 MB)

  • Every page is re-rendered as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • A mostly-text PDF may not reach 1 MB; the tool reports the smallest usable size instead.
  • Very large scans can take a few extra seconds while the tool searches for the right quality.

Questions (1 MB)

How do I compress a PDF to 1MB?+
Drop the PDF below. The target is already set to 1 MB, so click Compress to Target Size and download the result. Everything runs in your browser.
Can every PDF get under 1MB?+
No. Scans and photo PDFs usually can. A mostly-text PDF may stop above the target. The tool tells you the size it reached, and it never downloads a file larger than your original.
Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?+
No. The file is processed in this browser tab and never sent to a server. You can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
Will the text still be selectable?+
No. Each page becomes a compressed image, so the words turn into pixels. Keep the original if you need to copy or search the text later.
Is there a free limit or a watermark?+
No. The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Can I keep the text selectable at 1MB?+
Sometimes. Use the keep text selectable mode on the Compress PDF page. It recompresses only the images, so it works for files whose size comes from photos and may not reach 1 MB.
