Compress PDF to 500KB

Drop your file and the tool re-encodes it until it fits under 500 KB, in this tab, with no upload. Scans and photo PDFs usually get there. Text-only PDFs may not.

Your file never leaves your device.

When you need 500 KB

500 KB is a common cap on web forms, older systems and student or recruitment portals, often for one document or a bundle of supporting pages.

It is generous enough for a legible multi-page scan, which is why it is the target we would try first if the form does not say exactly 100 KB or 200 KB.

A recruitment portal takes one PDF of up to 500 KB, and your qualification certificates scanned together are 7 MB. Setting the target to 500 KB shrinks the scan until it fits, and shows the final size before you download.

What gets sacrificed at 500 KB

In our test every image-based file reached 500 KB, including a 20-page, 29 MB scan that came out at 489 KB. At that size a long scan is readable but soft, at roughly 40 dpi, so check small print before you submit.

If it will not reach 500 KB

A text-only PDF. If the file is already smaller than 500 KB, leave it alone. Turning a text PDF into images can make it larger.

Still too big. A very long scan can miss. Split it into parts, or remove pages the form does not need.

How to check nothing is uploaded (500 KB)

Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then drop a file and compress it. No request carries the document. The full method is in how to tell if a PDF tool uploads your file.

Limits (500 KB)

  • Every page is re-rendered as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • A mostly-text PDF may not reach 500 KB; the tool reports the smallest usable size instead.
  • Very large scans can take a few extra seconds while the tool searches for the right quality.

Questions (500 KB)

How do I compress a PDF to 500KB?+
Drop the PDF below. The target is already set to 500 KB, so click Compress to Target Size and download the result. Everything runs in your browser.
Can every PDF get under 500KB?+
No. Scans and photo PDFs usually can. A mostly-text PDF may stop above the target. The tool tells you the size it reached, and it never downloads a file larger than your original.
Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?+
No. The file is processed in this browser tab and never sent to a server. You can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
Will the text still be selectable?+
No. Each page becomes a compressed image, so the words turn into pixels. Keep the original if you need to copy or search the text later.
Is there a free limit or a watermark?+
No. The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Will 500KB keep a scan readable?+
Usually yes. In our test, scans of up to twenty pages reached 500 KB and stayed readable but soft. Check the output at full size before submitting anything with small print.
