Works on PDFs with real text, like exports, invoices and bank statements. Scans have no text to read, so run them through OCR PDF first. Merged cells, colors and images are not carried over, so check the columns before you rely on the numbers.

About PDF to Excel

Turn a PDF table into an Excel spreadsheet. The converter reads the text layer, groups it into rows and columns by position, and writes an .xlsx with numbers you can add up. It runs in your browser and works best on exports, invoices and statements that have real text.

Why convert with PDF to Excel instead of desktop software?
  • Get a PDF table into a spreadsheet without retyping it.
  • No sign-up and no watermark on the Excel file.
  • The PDF is read in your browser, so bank statements and invoices are never uploaded.
  • Numbers, amounts and percentages are written as real numbers, so totals and formulas work.

Where this comes up

You download a three-page bank statement as a PDF and want to total your spending by category. Convert it with all pages on one sheet, check the first rows in the preview, and sort and sum the amounts in Excel. A scanned paper statement would first need OCR, because it has no text to read.

How the conversion actually works

pdf.js reads each page in this tab and reports every piece of text with its position. The tool groups pieces on the same baseline into rows, starts a new cell where there is a wide gap, and lines cells up into columns by their horizontal position. Plain numbers, comma-grouped numbers, amounts with a $, GBP or EUR sign, bracketed negatives and percentages are written as numbers; everything else stays text. The .xlsx file is built in the browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Only text and its position are read, so images, colors, borders and merged cells are not part of the output.

What to know before you convert
  • It needs a text layer. A scanned PDF has none, so run OCR PDF first and convert the searchable result.
  • Columns are guessed from text positions. Tables without clear gaps, or cells that wrap onto several lines, can land in the wrong column or split across rows.
  • Merged cells, colors, borders, images and charts are not carried over.
  • Numbers in other styles, such as 1.234,50, and dates are kept as text so nothing is changed by guesswork.
PDF to Excel compared to uploading tools

iLovePDF, Smallpdf and PDF24 all offer this kind of job, and the online ones upload your file to their servers to do it. Here the work happens in this tab instead. Frequently asked questions (PDF to Excel)

How do I convert a PDF to Excel for free?+
Drop the PDF here, click Convert to Excel and download the .xlsx. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?+
No. The file is read in this browser tab and never sent anywhere. You can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?+
Not directly. A scan has no text to read. Run it through OCR PDF first, then convert the searchable PDF.
Will the columns match the PDF exactly?+
Usually for clean tables, not always. Columns are guessed from where the text sits, so check the preview and fix any odd cells in Excel.
Are the numbers real numbers or text?+
Plain numbers, amounts with a currency sign and percentages are written as real numbers, so you can sum them. Dates and numbers like 1.234,50 stay text.
Should I use one sheet or one sheet per page?+
Use one sheet when a table continues across pages, such as a statement. Use one sheet per page when each page holds a different table.
