Compress PDF to 200KB

Drop your file and the tool re-encodes it until it fits under 200 KB, in this tab, with no upload. If it cannot get there, it tells you the smallest size it reached.

Your file never leaves your device.

When you need 200 KB

A 200 KB limit is common on university and scholarship application forms, government portals and some job boards, usually per attachment.

It leaves room for a clean one or two page scan, which is why it is a little easier to hit than 100 KB and still tight for anything with photographs.

An application form accepts attachments up to 200 KB, and your signed document is 2.4 MB. Setting the target to 200 KB shrinks it until it fits, and shows the final size before you download.

What gets sacrificed at 200 KB

At 200 KB a one-page phone photo of a document came out at 190 KB in our test, with sharp enough text to read comfortably. Multi-page scans give up more: each page gets a smaller share of the 200 KB, so photographs go soft first and small print next.

If it will not reach 200 KB

A long scan. In our test a 20-page, 29 MB scan came out at 203,060 bytes, 1.5 percent over 200 KB, and the tool reported the miss. Remove one or two pages, or split the file in two.

A text document. A mostly-text PDF would grow when every page is turned into an image. The tool does not download a larger file and tells you so. If the original is already under the limit, use the original.

A higher limit. If the form offers a second field for supporting documents, or a 500 KB option, the next size page is far more reliable.

How to check nothing is uploaded (200 KB)

Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then drop a file and compress it. No request carries the document. The full method is in how to tell if a PDF tool uploads your file.

Limits (200 KB)

  • Every page is re-rendered as an image, so text is no longer selectable or searchable.
  • A mostly-text PDF may not reach 200 KB; the tool reports the smallest usable size instead.
  • Very large scans can take a few extra seconds while the tool searches for the right quality.

Questions (200 KB)

How do I compress a PDF to 200KB?+
Drop the PDF below. The target is already set to 200 KB, so click Compress to Target Size and download the result. Everything runs in your browser.
Can every PDF get under 200KB?+
No. Scans and photo PDFs usually can. A mostly-text PDF may stop above the target. The tool tells you the size it reached, and it never downloads a file larger than your original.
Is my PDF uploaded when I compress it?+
No. The file is processed in this browser tab and never sent to a server. You can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser developer tools.
Will the text still be selectable?+
No. Each page becomes a compressed image, so the words turn into pixels. Keep the original if you need to copy or search the text later.
Is there a free limit or a watermark?+
No. The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Is 200KB enough for a scanned page?+
Usually yes for one or two pages. In our test most single-page scans fit 200 KB. A scan of twenty pages does not, because each page gets too small a share.
