How to merge or combine PDF files without Adobe

Short answer: You can merge PDF files without Adobe Acrobat. A Mac does it for free in Preview. Windows and iPhone have no built-in PDF merge, so use the free Merge PDF tool: add the files, put them in order and download one PDF. It runs in your browser, so your files are not uploaded.
Ways to merge or combine PDF files without Adobe Acrobat
| Method | Cost | Where it works | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| EasyPDFLoad in the browser | Free, no sign-up | Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Chromebook | PDFs only. Files are not uploaded. Drag to reorder needs a mouse. |
| Mac Preview | Free, built in | Mac only | Several steps, and Save can overwrite the first file. |
| Windows File Explorer, Edge | Not available | Windows | Windows has no built-in way to combine PDFs. |
| iPhone Files app | Not available | iPhone, iPad | Files can hold PDFs but not join them. |
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Free | Windows, Mac, mobile | Opens PDFs but does not combine them. |
| Adobe Acrobat (paid plan) | Subscription | Windows, Mac | Also merges Word and Excel files. Costs money for a one-off job. |
“Merge”, “combine” and “join” PDF files all mean the same job: putting the pages of several files into one document in the order you choose. If you want the privacy side first, see how to check whether a tool actually uploads your file.
How to merge two PDF files
Open the Merge PDF tool, add both files, drag them into the order you want and click Merge PDFs. The merged file downloads straight away, usually in under a minute, and nothing is uploaded. The same steps work for three or more files, and the sections below cover Windows, Mac and iPhone in detail.
How to merge PDF files on Windows
File Explorer and Edge cannot join PDFs, and printing several PDFs to a PDF printer does not reliably combine them into one file. The quickest way without installing anything is the browser tool.
- Open the Merge PDF tool in Edge, Chrome or Firefox.
- Drag the PDFs in from File Explorer, or click the drop area and hold Ctrl to select several files at once.
- Drag the rows in the list into the order you want the pages to appear.
- Click Merge PDFs. A file named merged.pdf is saved to your Downloads folder.
Processing runs in the tab with JavaScript. There is no upload queue because there is no upload, which matters if you are joining a signed offer letter and a passport scan.
How to merge PDF files on a Mac with Preview
- Open the first PDF in Preview.
- Choose View, then Thumbnails, so the page sidebar is visible.
- Drag the second PDF from a Finder window into the sidebar and drop it below the last thumbnail. All of its pages are added. You can also choose Edit, Insert, Page from File.
- Drag thumbnails up or down to fix the order.
- Choose File, then Export as PDF, and save under a new name. Using plain Save instead would change your first file.
Use Preview when the files are already on your Mac. Use the browser tool when you are on a work laptop that blocks installs, or you want the same steps on every device.
How to merge PDF files on iPhone
The Files app can store and preview PDFs but has no merge action, so the route that needs no App Store install is Safari with the merge tool on iPhone.
- Open the Merge PDF tool in Safari and tap the drop area.
- Choose Browse and pick the PDFs from Files, adding them in the order you want the pages to appear. Dragging rows to reorder is built for a mouse and may not work on a touchscreen, so order by adding.
- Tap Merge PDFs.
- Open merged.pdf from the Downloads list in Safari, or find it in the Files app.
Adobe Acrobat, if you already pay for it
In desktop Acrobat on a paid plan: Tools, then Combine Files, add the PDFs (and Word or Excel files if you need them), drag the thumbnails into order, then click Combine. It is fine if the licence is already on the machine. The browser tool only merges PDFs, so convert other formats to PDF first.
Common mistakes when merging PDFs
- Merging before checking page order. It's faster to drag thumbnails into order first, then merge once, than to merge and redo it because page 3 landed before page 2.
- Merging a form you still need to fill in. Merging copies pages as-is; if one of the source files has fillable form fields, fill it in first with Fill & Sign, then merge, so the values are baked into the page rather than lost in the copy.
- Assuming a merge tool can open a locked file. A password-protected source PDF needs to be unlocked first — merging reads pages directly and can't open an encrypted file on its own.
- Not checking the final page count. If you meant to combine 12 pages and the result has 11, a page silently failed to copy (usually a corrupted source file) — worth a quick page-by-page check before sending anything important.
Troubleshooting a merge that didn't work
Merging is one of the more reliable PDF operations — pages are copied, not re-rendered — but a handful of things can still trip it up:
- "Merge" button stays disabled. You need at least two files added before the button activates — check that both uploads actually completed.
- An error appears immediately after adding a file. The file is either not a valid PDF (try opening it normally first) or it's password-protected — unlock it first, then add it here.
- The merged file has fewer pages than expected. Re-check the file list before merging — a file can look added but have zero pages if it failed to parse; remove and re-add it.
- The tab feels slow or unresponsive. Very large files (hundreds of megabytes combined) can strain an older device's memory — try merging in two smaller batches instead of one giant one.
Tips for a clean merged PDF
- Name files 01-cover, 02-body, 03-appendix before you drop them in.
- Fix sideways pages with Rotate PDF after the merge, not by redoing it.
- Check the final page count against what you expected before you send it.
- If the combined file is too big for email, compress it once after merging — see how to reduce PDF file size without losing quality.
- Add page numbers once, after the merge — use Add Page Numbers on the finished document so a later re-merge can't knock the numbering out of sync.
- If a signature still needs to go on the final document, sign it after merging with Sign PDF — that way your signature lands on the actual final page, not a page that shifts once more files get added.
Merge PDF FAQ
Can I merge PDF files without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. On a Mac, Preview combines PDFs for free. On Windows and iPhone, use a browser tool such as EasyPDFLoad Merge PDF, which is free and does not upload your files.
How do I merge PDF files for free?
Use a browser merger that does not require an account. EasyPDFLoad Merge PDF is free, has no page cap, and does not watermark the download.
Does merging change the quality of the pages?
No. A proper merge copies pages as-is. It does not recompress images. Quality loss shows up when you compress afterwards, not when you join the files.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. A merge tool needs to open each file's pages, which an encrypted PDF blocks. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then merge the unlocked copy.
Is there a limit to how many PDFs I can merge?
No hard limit is enforced by the tool. Very large numbers of large files are bounded by your device's available memory rather than by us, since everything runs in this browser tab.
